Old Specimen Rooms

There are three specimen rooms at National Sun Yat-sen University’s Department of Marine Biotechnology and Resources: the First Specimen Exhibition Room, the Second Specimen Exhibition Room, and the Research Specimen Room.

The First Specimen Exhibition Room and the Research Specimen Room were established in July 1994. The First Specimen Exhibition Room currently displays 116 algae specimens, 138 crustacean specimens, and 152 mineral specimens.

The Second Specimen Exhibition Room was established in November 1998. At present, it holds 314 shellfish specimens and 11 others, including sea urchins, sea dragons, coral, polyps, starfish, and brittle stars. The Research Specimen Room is mainly for educational and research use and is not currently open to the public.

Most specimens are sourced from the department’s annual South-Coast Ecological Research Team activities; student research in coastal areas such as Chiayi, Liuqiu Island, and Kenting; and fish markets in the Kaohsiung-Pingtung area. From collection to preparation, everything is done by students themselves. Although the specimens are not rare or precious, the collection is a labor of love by the students.

Originally intended only for educating students within the department, the First Specimen Exhibition Room was opened to the public during the university’s anniversary celebration in 1994. Later, due to visitations from other schools, it was decided to formally open the room to the public, allowing field trips and visits from primary and secondary schools as well as the public. So far, the First Specimen Exhibition Room has welcomed field trips from approximately 130 schools, with a cumulative attendance of over 16000. Department faculty or students provide guided tours for all visiting groups.

Due to generous donations of specimens from students as well as members of the public who heard of the Specimen Room from the newspaper (thanks to Mr. Yi-Hsin Hsu of Gushan and Mr. Li-Yuan Lin of Cijin for their donations of biological specimens, and also to Mr. Yung-Sheng Cheng for his help with procuring a donation of east-coast minerals from the Eastern District Office,  Bureau of Mine, MOEA), the First Specimen Exhibition Room was unable to accommodate any more specimens, so in 1996 the department made a plan to build the Second Specimen Exhibition Room. However, due to insufficient funds, it could not be carried out until National Sun Yat-sen University made a special allocation of funds for the expansion. That same year, during the university’s anniversary celebration, Prof. Wei-Chi Liu, NSYSU President, and Prof. Der-Duen Sheu, Dean of the College of Marine Sciences, cut the ribbon to officially open the Second Specimen Exhibition Room, which would provide richer field trip experiences to primary and secondary students as well as the community at large.
